UMaine Homecoming Set for October 26-28
The University of Maine’s largest and most activity-filled event of the year begins on Friday, Oct. 26 when the UMaine Alumni Association kicks off Homecoming 2018.
Running Oct. 26-28, the three-day gathering features a wide variety of formal and informal social, recreational, and educational options. They include class reunions, tailgating, campus tours, concerts, lectures, presentations, and the annual craft fair as well as NCAA field hockey, football, and women’s ice hockey games.
Alumni and their guests who pre-register for Homecoming (UMaineHomecoming.com) by 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 will receive complimentary gifts and discounts on certain purchases.
Friday events include a “Welcome Home” reception for alumni and their guests at Buchanan Alumni House, a lecture by author and retired journalism professor Kathryn Olmsted, and a women’s ice hockey game against UNH. Tours of UMaine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center and the Emera Astronomy Center will also take place. The nationally ranked UMaine field hockey team takes on Vermont that afternoon as well. The Black Bear women’s ice hockey team will play New Hampshire Friday evening at Alfond Arena.
On Saturday, a full day of activities starts in the morning with the annual M Club Silver & Gold Breakfast and multiple receptions and class gatherings across campus. The UMaine Alumni Association’s annual Craft Fair and Maine Marketplace runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the New Balance Field House. It will feature more than 150 vendors offering a wide variety of Maine-made items and foods.
Pre-game tailgating opens in the parking lots near Alfond Stadium at 10 a.m., with the UMaine vs. Albany football game starting at 1 p.m. Alumni Village, a large catered pre-game party for alumni and guests, precedes the game from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Alumni Village will be located near the entrance to the New Balance Field House.
Shuttle buses will be running to the craft fair and tailgating areas from various parking lots on campus on Saturday only.
Also on Saturday, UMaine’s admissions office will host an open house beginning at 9 a.m. at the New Balance Student Recreation Center, which is located next to the tennis courts on Hilltop Road. The Maine Business School will host an open house at D.P. Corbett Business Building beginning at 10 a.m. Other academic departments and colleges of UMaine are also planning alumni receptions. The School of Performing Arts will hold its annual alumni concert at 7:30 p.m. at Minsky Recital Hall.
On Sunday, the craft fair runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The women’s ice hockey team plays Boston College at Alfond Arena at 2 p.m. The symphonic band and jazz ensemble’s annual Homecoming concert will take place at 2 p.m. at UMaine’s Collins Center for the Arts.
