February Foraging: Looking ahead – Sweet water!

Winter is a good time to plan for the upcoming foraging season. Soon the tree sap / sweet water will be flowing providing minerals and vitamins, followed by flowers, leaves and fruit. Leafless trees provide the perfect canvas get a closer look and gain confidence to identify trees.

Join us in February to:
– Identify the most prominent/useful trees during winter.
– Prepare trees and yourself for ‘sugaring season’ in the near future and collecting season in the month & years to come.
– Begin your personalized Tree ID booklet ‘leaving’ room for seasonal updates.
– Enjoy a hearty soup with acorn flour muffins or pancake, local maple syrup and locally
foraged tea.

Maine Master Naturalist Larry Beauregard shares his tree knowledge and enthusiasm to get you ready for the upcoming pleasure of harvesting sweet tree waters and how to turn them into syrup. With additional support of Maine Master Naturalist Gudrun Keszöcze you prepare necessary equipment and start your Tree ID booklet. Depending on weather condition, tap trees.

Location: Parker Reed shelter, accessible through Gate 1 Be prepared to walk ½ mile.
