24th Annual “Hike for the Homeless” to Benefit Those Living on the Streets
April 6 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Close to a thousand area residents will take time out of their busy lives to walk in support of the homeless as part of the 24th Annual Hike for the Homeless on Saturday, April 6, 2019, starting at 11:00 a.m. Families, individuals, organizations, schools, churches, businesses, and clubs take part in this event every year.
In 2018, 952 Hike for the Homeless participants raised $37,300 to help Bangor Area Homeless Shelter guests. These financial resources are being put to good use. Last year, 134 individuals were placed into permanent, stable housing – a 31 percent increase over the previous year. In addition, the Shelter provided temporary housing for 399 overnight guests – a 15 percent increase over the previous year.
The Shelter also works to address food insecurity. In 2018, the Shelter served 10,237 meals to the needy in their soup kitchen while supplying 1,034 households with food through the organization’s food pantry.
For the first time this year, individuals participating in the Hike for the Homeless will start and complete the hike at the Bangor waterfront in the parking area next to the Sea Dog restaurant. Registration for the hike begins at 10:00 a.m. and the hike begins at 11:00 a.m. At the conclusion of the hike, participants will return to the Bangor waterfront near the Sea Dog for a barbeque lunch, raffle prizes, music, and opportunities to learn more about the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.
